Our Roots-St Denys Community Food Project

Our Story

From the depths of Covid and Lockdown, an amazing project has grown in St Denys thanks to the work of Victoria and the Feed the Community Project. Between 30 & 50 households have been coming along each Friday morning, able to choose fresh and store cupboard food, which is surplus from local supermarkets and stores. And it's not just about food & physical health, but also friendship & mental health. There's time to sit, chat, grab a cuppa (or two) and build friendships.

Feed the Community is now focusing its energy & resources on other parts of the city, but it leaves strong foundations to build upon. And so St Denys Community Food Project has emerged.

Our Values

We're holding on to the values that have always been central to Friday mornings...

  • Self-referral - so the food is open to anyone who wants it.
  • Free food - at the point of collection
  • Welcoming social space - where people can relax, chat and have a cuppa
  • Reducing food waste - by redistributing surplus food.
  • Community building - through people coming together with needs and strengths.

The Team:

The project is led by the Project Coordinators: Gavin Millar, Kayleigh Meeks and Marion Hitchins (and with background support from Rev Sera Rumble).  There's also a great group of committed team members who serve food, make drinks, welcome people, collect food from shop and help everything run smoothly. If you'd like to join the team, just get in touch (see below)
