4 Words that Help Us Care Well

We've recently stuck four words on the wall in church office and it's amazing how many times these words have been helpful in conversations and decision-making. Especially when the conversation has been about 'what should we do?' when faced with the growing needs of people who are homeless or struggling.

Warmth: this is about how we interact and respond to a person when we meet them, offering a smile and kindness as we interact. This is fine in theory, but I know there are times when pressures and multi-tasking have meant I've forgotten the basics of responding with a smile and kindness.

Compassion: this is about listening and tuning into the person so that we recognise the struggles they're facing. Instead of rushing to give answers or find solutions, listening well and with care can be significant. It makes a big difference if someone feels heard.

Respect: this is about treating people with dignity and honouring their capacity to make decisions, rather than forcing solutions or changes on them. No one should be viewed as simply a problem to be solved. Everyone is beloved child of God, made in the image of God.

Limits: This one has been the liberation for many of us. This is about saying 'no', and 'that's enough', and 'I can't do anything else.' and 'here's a different organisation that might be able to help'. It's about recognising that we have limited knowledge, time, resources, energy, information and wisdom, and can't make everything alright for everyone. And that's alright.

Over the past month, having these words on our office wall, seems to have lifted a weight off people's shoulders (especially the 'limits' word). It's also been a nudge (especially for me) to check myself and my interactions, to make sure that I am actually remembering the 'warmth' that is needed.

We're learning to care well: for the amazing but vulnerable people we serve and minister to, but also for ourselves (and let's face it, we're also amazing and vulnerable too)
